We welcome entries from all Schools and Homeschools in the appropriate age bracket..
Looking for an exciting Library or Class project that doesn’t need any prep time? Try the Nationwide What On Earth! Magazine Schools Quiz Challenge!
Join hundreds of schools from around the country engaging their pupils and developing reading for pleasure through non-fiction, natural curiosity and a touch of competitive spirit. There are loads of book prizes to be won during the live on-line heats and your team might just make it through to win an expenses paid trip to the Live London Final.
1) Register
It only takes a moment! You will receive a welcome email confirming the date and time slot for your on-line heat along with a unique entry reference number that you will need to participate.
2) CHOOSE
You need a team of 4. On the date of the November final, the contestants participating should either be in the 8 - 11 or 11 - 14 age category. Some schools also include a reserve player.
3) READ!
This is the easiest part! Nearer the date of the competition, you will be sent digital copies of all the magazine editions that are needed, and the team should then read and digest them thoroughly. This is an ‘open magazine’ quiz so these can be used during the on-line event, but the better they are known, the faster the team will be able to answer the questions.
Some schools decide to purchase a package of the editions that are being used at a special price and that offer will follow shortly.
4) THE Online Heats
There will be a series of live on-line heats at the start of November. The heats last about an hour and will be in the form of a Zoom call, hosted by our quizmaster, with many other schools taking part at the same time. They are super exciting and a great chance to engage with schools from all over the country. There are no “winners” or “losers” so all children can participate and feel the buzz of being in a nationwide event.
On the day, please make sure that your four contestants will be available at a shared computer screen at the appointed time! The heat consists of a series of multiple choice questions written by experts at What on Earth! Magazine. There will also be plenty of laughter, lots of excitement and a countdown clock to add some extra spice!
All the questions will be inspired by topics covered in six issues of the What on Earth! Magazine and these will be announced at the beginning of the autumn term so as to ensure that everybody has a fair chance regardless of when they registered. Full detail and information will be sent after the summer holiday.
What is it like to get through to the Live London Final?
5) The LIVE LONDON Grand Final
Shortly after the online heats have taken place, the top FOUR schools in each age category (8 - 11 and 11 - 14) will be notified that they have reached the finals stage. You will then have 24 hours to confirm your participation.
It is a condition of entry is that your school must be willing and able to make the trip to London for the in-person finals. All schools that make it through to the Grand Finals day are offered a significant distance related travel bursary, so cost is not a barrier to entry.
Those schools that are unsuccessful will receive notification and a special consolation prize.
The Finals day will take place in-person at Stationers’ Hall, London EC4, Contestants, teachers, families and friends are all invited to this event to see which school will be crowned the What On Earth! Schools Quiz Champions 2O25! There will be one overall winner for 8-11 and one for 11-14. There will also be a championship playoff between the age groups, which last year was won in a nail biting final few moments by The Wymondham Wizards from Norfolk.
Finals day (starting around 10am and ending around 3.30 pm) will be a mixture of quiz types including the traditional ‘fastest finger’ Details will be announced nearer the day.
There are Trophies and medals and books for all the finalists and the winning schools in each age group will also receive a voucher to spend on What on Earth books of their choice (www.whatonearthbooks.com).
