Schools Community
We know how hard schools work to engage pupils and help them develop a love of learning, and we would like to do our bit to help!
Here, you will find all the ways in which we support schools, from subscription discounts to additional resources for teachers. You can also read about our latest 'big picture' projects. We have a long-standing relationship with schools, and increasing literacy and oracy levels is at the core of what we do. What on Earth! Magazine has been introduced to children across the country, and we know it can make a difference.
Every school subscription enjoys FREE membership of our school community. There are some great EXTRA benefits, and none of them cost anything!

Schools exclusive: Chat Pack
Chat Pack is our new initiative offering classroom content and activities based on our magazine. Available as a downloadable supplement, it allows teachers to easily share content with students. The goal is to help reinforce existing knowledge and expand general awareness.
ChatPack will be sent to you each month with the magazine and includes:
Curriculum based - visual information pages and text that teachers can use to cross reference the magazine directly back to the national curriculum for KS2 and KS3 topics.
WordPower - essential vocabularly, buzzwords and meaningful language that teachers can use to stimulate discussion and oracy, as well as enhance understanding of the content. Written by our great colleague and language expert Kelly Ashley of the Open University.
Puzzle pages - printable resources that promote magazine comprehension and curriculum knowledge in order to complete the tasks. These are well loved by our current magazine readership and encourage much discussion!
A FACTUAL city! HULL embraces non-fiction
Across the city, hundreds of pupils in the primary schools will be diving into the magazine to immerse themselves in non fiction, which we believe is often more strange than anything that can be made up!
A terrifically exciting project, run by Hull Schools Library Service, supported by the James Reckitt Library Trust, will enable all the year five pupils across the city to enjoy the magazine in school s as to raise literacy and oracy levels and to encourage the children to develop a deeper love of learning and reading for pleasure.
The project will be monitored by researchers from the One University and Professor Cremin will be presenting the results at the astonishing Big Malarkey festival held in the city at the end of the school year.
Adding some real excitement to the project, there will be a citywide quiz that is open to teams of four. Heats will begin in June and the overall winners will be decided in a grand live final. They will be brought to London in the autumn, all expenses paid, and they will take part in the What on Earth! nationwide quiz against teams from all over the country.
Like all What on Earth! quizzes, it will be staged so as to level the playing field and ensure everybody can compete on an equal basis regardless of life experiences. All the questions will be taken from magazine content.
Contact john@whatonearth.co.uk if you would like to talk further about the project.
Out thanks to the James Reckitt Library Trust and Hull School Library Service for partnering on this project.
