Editor/ Senior Editor (title dependent on experience)
The Senior Editor will work across What on Earth Publishing and its sister company What on Earth Magazines, leading an expanding contract publishing program and also contributing to other book and magazine projects.
The Senior Editor’s responsibilities will include:
– In close consultation with the Magazine Editor and the Publisher, take the editorial lead on the State Chronicles project, including but not limited to project managing, commissioning, editing and flat-planning books, newspapers and other educational resources for the first 13 US states.
–Take the lead on all What on Earth Magazines custom publishing projects, building on the success of the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum newspaper.
– Working closely with the Magazine Editor, develop new ideas and content for the monthly Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine, including commissioning, editing and writing content.
– Work closely with Books and Magazine teams to develop joint projects that can succeed across media.
– Working closely with the design and production teams and with outside consultants and partners, keep all projects on time, within budget and to the highest editorial standards.
Requirements for this role include:
– Experience of commissioning, editing and writing engaging and authoritative children’s non-fiction content to the highest standards.
– Ability to manage the production and workflow of both print and digital content, including collaborating with and managing photographers, illustrators, authors and other contributors, while also working closely with colleagues in the What on Earth Design, Sales, Marketing and Production teams.
– A meticulous attention to detail, including experience of sub-editing and proofreading.
– Excellent communication and people-management skills and the ability to function as part of a highly collaborative team.
– A passion for children’s non-fiction publishing and a belief in What on Earth’s mission to engage children’s natural curiosity and passion for learning, offer readers diverse perspectives on the world and help them connect the dots to build a lifetime love of learning.
– Experience of and flair with digital and social media is a significant plus, especially as Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine looks to rapidly grow its audience and subscriber base globally.
